It was a day like any other day. Derek Rollins got up, ready to start another average day. Glancing around his cluttered apartment, he thinks 'I really should clean this place up a little'. Sighing, because he knows that he'll never find the time, he got ready to walk to his morning classes. He rides down the elevator, grabbing a soda from the machine in the lobby, and as he walks out into the near empty city street, sipping his drink, he doesn't even see the semitruck bearing down on him until the last possible second. Suddenly spinning in terror, "OH Holy SH-" *SMACK, CRACK, CRUNCH*. and that is how Derek Rollins left this world, and entered another.
(most chapters from here on out will be from Derek's POV)
Suddenly, I'm flying through a tunnel, the walls are hundreds of feet away, yet so close I could reach out and touch them. They are a trippy, swirling rainbow of colors. This would probably be a good time to reflect on life or something, but instead all I can think about is how I'm on the flume ride from hell!
"Oh my God oh my God oh my God oh my God oh my Go- Hey wait" All of a sudden I realize I don't hurt. in fact, I can't feel anything at all. Looking down, I realize that I seem to be missing everything in terms of the body department
"Uuh...Ok...That's weird". As I'm flying, I realize that the edges of the tunnel are turning white, and a blinding light is beginning to fill in the edges of my vision.
"Aaah! What's Going on?" I shout as the blinding light fills in the rest of my vision, then suddenly, black replaces the white.
I wake up as quickly as a passed out. Gasping, and panting, covered in cold sweat, I look down and examine myself, glad to see my body is still there. after a quick check to make sure all my extremities are still there, I look down at the strange clothing I'm wearing. It seems to be some sort of tight fitting leather armor dyed blue, with blue metal plating on the knees, boots, chest, elbows, shoulders, and gloves. 'This is Kinda weird' I think to myself 'Who dressed me?', and then I realize my body feels a little...strange Examining closely, I see the muscles of my limbs underneath the armor, and they seem more muscular then they used to. Not built like a bodybuilder, but more lean and toned-like a runner's muscle. Shaking my head I think 'This just keeps getting weirder'. Then I see the sword lying a few feet from me. By all accounts, it is a beautiful thing, a handle of soft brown leather, the blade is wide and pearly white, with a shimmering blue line running down the middle. The shape reminds me of an X-acto knife, straight, and then one side angles back to form a fine point. Perhaps weirdest of all is the fact that it seems to be...calling me, asking me to pick it up. As I reach for it, I realize something that should have occurred to me long before now. I have no idea where I am, but...Taking a moment to look around.. I'm in an underground cage. There are rock walls, sloping up toward a ceiling about four feet above my head, and on the other side of me is a set of metal bars. And suddenly, I see a man standing behind them. He's wearing strange red robes that obscure his face, and then he says
"Well, it's about time!"
"I mean, honestly, I Thought you would never notice me! You were just standing there admiring that armor, and sword, and yourself! I've never seen anyone so self absorbed!"
"Well, Sorry sir, it's just that I don't know where I am, why I'm dressed like this, why I'm suddenly fit despite rarely exercising, etcetera"
"Well, don't worry, I can explain all that"
Oh, well thank y-"
"But I won't"
"Um...What? Why not?"
"All you need to know is that you are in another world, called Horizon, and I am a wizard."
"A wizard, what do you mean? Is that code for something, or?"
"A wizard" he says, and then flicks his wrist. suddenly, a shimmering ball of fire appears hovering above his hand.
"Woah! That...Uh, That's certainly something. Alright, so you're a wizard, and I'm in another world. cool. Do you want to send me on some sort of magical quest or something? I'm down!"
"No. you're going to spend the rest of your life mining valuable ore and making me rich until you drop dead"
"And...how do you know I'm going to do that?"
"Because" He calms states, "Grizzle is going to put an enchanted collar on you that will make you obey me. Oh Grizzle!". Suddenly, tromping into the room comes a hulking beast, covered in thick shaggy fur, wearing nothing but a loincloth and a glowing metal collar. With huge horns and fists, and a bullish face, he certainly makes an intimidating figure.
"Grizzle here is a minotaur, and one of my overseers". He unlocks the cage, and as Grizzle steps inside, I can see that he is holding a smaller collar. I'd like to say that I bravely picked up my sword and stood my ground, but what actually happened is I flopped to the ground, grabbed the sword and backed up against the wall on my hands and knees.
"Umm... Hey man, can we talk about this?"
"Sorry, no can do..." The wizard calls as he leaves the room "Grizzle, you know what to do".
Trying to negotiate with my captor as a get shakily to my feet, I say "Hey, uh, Grizzle, please don't do this, I-I'll give you anything you want!"
"Sorry" He says in a gruff, deep voice, "I can't resist the collar's enchantment, no matter how hard I try."
As he steps toward me, I decide to take a chance. I lunge toward him as fast as I can, swinging my sword in an over the shoulder arc as I go. Clearly expecting this, he casually unsheathes a huge battleaxe from behind his back and blocks my strike with the handle.
"Okay, Now I'm gonna have to hurt ya" He grunts and shoves me back, sending me tumbling like a kitten, and just as I see him raising the axe over his head, a blinding wave of power washes over me, and I hear a roaring in my ears as I scream "NO!!!" and raise the sword, pointing it at him with both hands. The blade glows a brilliant blue, and a blast of blue fire erupts from it, knocking him down and covering his chest in a blaze. I see the blaze on his chest turn white, then explode into smaller red fireballs rocketing around the room, quickly dying out as they hit the rock. I stare at the burned pink flesh on his chest as he grunts and reaches for his axe, and suddenly realizes I've just sunk my blade a foot deep in his chest.
"Aah...Oh Gods...That's not good,"
"Oh Holy Christ! I'm so sorry, man I just reacted! I-"
"Quickly, stab the collar!"
"Er...Okay." I stab the collar on his neck, and it stops glowing, breaks open, and falls off.
"Th-thank you" he stammers.
"Oh my God you're dying! We need to get you to a hospit-"
"Shut up and" he pauses to draw in a ragged breath, "Listen. This world can be a harsh place. you can't be afraid to kill people who are trying to kill you. If you want to help me-" He shudders, and his muscles tense "Kill people like that bastard wizard. Fight for what's right, and...See the beauty in everything." He sighs. "Oh, one last thing...The key I-is tied in the fur on my waist. Escape the cage,". And with that, he draws in one last breath, and closes his eyes forever. I feel awful. I can't believe what I did to a guy that was actually pretty nice. But a new emotion fills me. Rage. Rage at the evil wizard for causing this. The beginnings of a plan forming in my mind, I grab the key, unlock the door, and walk out, ready to face whatever lies ahead.
